A rash of apparent burglaries in the adjacent communities of Dennysville and Edmunds are as troubling as they are puzzling.
Edmunds resident Jodie Lipton was one of nearly a dozen whose homes were broken into in recent weeks.
“We’ve basically turned the place inside out trying to see if anything is missing,” Lipton said, scratching her head. “So far it seems like everything is still here. Actually, we’ve found stuff we thought we lost in the move.”
The first incident was reported to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office in the early morning hours of August 31st.
An official statement from the Sheriff’s Office stated the following: “There were no signs of forced entry. No items were missing from the home. The caller reported a feeling that ‘something is missing’ from the residence.”
Since that first report, many others have come forward via social media to share their close encounters with the unknown individual who has come to be known as “the Dennys River Night Crawler.”
“Night Crawler Strikes Again!!!!” reads a Facebook post from Dawn McBrearity. “Didnt see him but He Was Here!!!!!”
“What we really want is for this individual to be apprehended and for these communities to be able to return to a state of normalcy,” Sheriff Berry Curtis said in an exclusive interview with The Lobster. “We can’t have our people living in constant fear that someone might wander in and leave without taking anything.”
Dennysville selectman Rich Harlow puts it best: “This is the first time in close to fifty years that I’ve recommended people lock their doors.”
